Damien Rice: ‘I opened every can of worms I could…’
We are deep in the barren Icelandic countryside, miles from Reykjavik, and Damien Rice is playing one of the most intimate shows of his life.
There’s a small crowd of friends and musicians and a handful of journalists present in this former swimming pool-turned-recording studio. It is in this very space that Sigur Ros made some of their finest albums.
But this Monday evening in early September is all about the songsmith from Celbridge, Co Kildare, beginning promotional rounds for the release his first album of new material in eight years.

“One” Featured in Trailer for The Impossible

Damien’s cover of U2’s “One”, which was released last year on a U2 covers album, is featured in a new film with Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts called The Impossible.

Damien and Bono at Electric Burma

Last night Damien performed at the “Electric Burma” concert in Dublin to celebrate Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Aung San Suu Kyi was in attendance and was presented with the Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience Award.
Damien was joined by Vyvienne Long to perform two of his own songs – “The Blower’s Daughter” and “Unplayed Piano”.

At the end of the night, Damien joined Bono on stage for renditions of U2’s “Walk On” and “One”, before being joined by the rest of the night’s performers to play songs such as “I Shall Be Released” and “Get Up, Stand Up”.

All proceed from the concert went to Amnesty International and Aung San Suu Kyi’s own foundation.

Damien on Achtung Baby Covers Album

Speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival, Bono disclosed that Damien is one of a number of great artists to be included on an Achtung Baby covers album commissioned by Q magazine.
Damien has recorded U2’s “One” for the album, which will be made available to mark the 20th anniversary of Achtung Baby’s release.
Other artists on the album include Depeche Mode, Patti Smith and Jack White.
